PEYDEN SHELTON
Dr. Peyden Shelton has earned a rapidly growing reputation as a dynamic performer and educator across the United States, Brazil, and Asia. He has appeared as a soloist with ensembles including the Salt Lake Symphony, Reston Symphony Orchestra, Winds of the Blue Ridge, and the University of North Texas Chamber Ensemble. In 2014, he won first place in the Graduate Soloist Division of the National Trumpet Competition. Since then, he has presented solo performances and guest artist residencies at universities nationwide and has been featured at major festivals such as the Virginia Tech Trumpet Festival, the Fredericksburg Brass Institute, and the Association of Brazilian Trumpeters International Conference.
As a chamber and ensemble musician, Dr. Shelton has performed with numerous groups including the Utah Symphony Orchestra, Mobile Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, Washington Chamber Orchestra, Symphony One, and the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas and Esa-Pekka Salonen. In 2019, he became a member of the internationally renowned Mirari Brass Quintet (miraribrass.com). He is also an active performer with trumpet ensembles such as Ascent and the Nova Trumpet Collective, and is a founding member of Fifth Bridge (fifthbridge.org), an electro-acoustic trumpet ensemble that has collaborated with artists and organizations including John Hollenbeck, David Sampson, Christopher Stark, NASA, the Harvard Center for Astrophysics, and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
As an educator, Dr. Shelton currently serves as Associate Professor of Trumpet at the University of Utah School of Music. Prior to his appointment in Utah, he taught on the faculties of the University of Rochester and Cornell University as Lecturer of Trumpet. He has presented clinics and masterclasses throughout the country at leading conferences and universities, including the International Trumpet Guild Conference, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the ABT International Festival, and the International Horn Symposium. His scholarship includes published articles in the International Trumpet Guild Journal, and he was a featured presenter at the 2019 ITG Conference in Miami, Florida. Within ITG, he is an active leader, serving on the Journal’s Music Review Team, Book Review Team, CD Committee, and Digital Conference Committee, and currently chairs the Orchestral Excerpt Competition. His research initiative, The Trumpet Repertoire Project, seeks to create and promote new works that foster both technical development and musical expression, particularly highlighting the voices of young contemporary American composers.
Dr. Shelton holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Professor James Thompson and Douglas Prosser. He also earned degrees from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and from Virginia Tech, studying under Craig Morris and Dr. John Adler. His recordings appear on Summit Records, SNOtone Records, and Mark Records, and he is featured in the fourth edition of Samuel Adler’s The Study of Orchestration (W.W. Norton & Company).
